Top to Bottom Renovation at the Historic Villa Resort
The Villa Resort in Cathedral City is the oldest of the over 40 resorts catering to a gay clientele in the Coachella Valley. New owners, and life partners, Bob Grinchuk and Reuel Olin recently purchased the historic property and have retained local architect and designer Hugh Gaspar to renovate the 2.5 acre property.
Hugh, a 14-year resident of the desert, has designed hotel and restaurant projects in New York, Washington DC, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Las Vegas and several here in the Coachella Valley.
The Villa Resort with its turn-of-the-century adobe buildings and 5 mid-century bungalow clusters will require a design concept which preserves the history and charm of the past while updating the use to current standards to deliver a superior product to the growing tourism market in the Coachella Valley.
The bringing together of the hotel, which will market to a gay clientele, and the wider market of the historic restaurant is probably the most challenging aspect of the project. A new pool and spa under the umbrella of the century-old date palm grove will bridge the two areas. The guest room units will be reorganized and sensitively redesigned and furnished with the mid-century era in mind. New patios will be added to all units creating outdoor space for each guest room. With an expanded bar and patio area for the restaurant, the hotel will fully utilize the expansive 2.5 acres of grounds.
